Birmingham Health Innovation Campus: Building the Future of Healthcare

Birmingham Health Innovation Campus (BHIC) is a central feature of the UK’s future health economy. Located in the heart of the West Midlands, BHIC is a world-class facility dedicated to accelerating healthcare innovation, research, and commercial growth.

Designated as one of just six Life Sciences Opportunity Zones in the UK, BHIC is more than a building – it’s the flagship for the region’s life sciences ambitions. With a £10.3bn health and life sciences economy surrounding it, BHIC sits at the intersection of academia, the NHS, and industry.

Home to PHTA: Innovation at speed

At the core of the campus lies the Precision Health Technologies Accelerator (PHTA) – a pioneering initiative offering lab space, grow-on space, and prototyping facilities for health tech companies working across biopharma, diagnostics, MedTech, and digital health.

“The PHTA is all about speeding up ideas – from concept to clinical validation – to deliver real benefit to patients and society,” says Professor Gino Martini, CEO of PHTA. “As part of the University of Birmingham we can facilitate access to world-class clinical-academics to support with R&D, enable collaborations with complementary facilities from across the Birmingham Health Partners ecosystem to maximise efficiency, and support businesses to scale up and succeed. And as the BHIC campus continues to expand across future phases of development, valuable opportunities to work collectively for patient benefit will only continue to grow.”

The campus benefits from its proximity to key partners including the University of Birmingham, which is developing BHIC in partnership with investor-developers Bruntwood SciTech, and the co-located University Hospitals Birmingham, and Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trusts – creating a direct line from research to real-world application.

A connected, collaborative space

BHIC is also part of a wider regional ecosystem that includes:

  • Access to integrated, anonymised patient data
  • A stable, diverse population ideal for clinical trials
  • Extensive public and private sector healthcare provision
  • Cutting-edge R&D centres like the Healthcare Technologies Institute and MD-TEC

Whether you’re an established multinational or an early-stage venture, BHIC and PHTA are designed to help health innovations scale quickly, while maintaining clinical excellence and patient impact.
