Amy Deakin, Managing Partner of Life Sciences Week
As the Life Sciences sector continues to push boundaries, partnerships have never been more pivotal. With Life Sciences Week fast approaching this September, we’re thrilled to shine a spotlight on one of our valued event hosts and collaborators —the NIHR HealthTech Research Centre in Devices, Digital and Robotics (HRC-DDR) working collaboratively with the Medical Devices Testing & Evaluation Centre (MD-TEC)—whose recent work beautifully showcases the potential of integrated innovation in health and care.
Turning Innovation into Impact
Over the past year, HRC-DDR and MD-TEC have been at the forefront of translational research, making complex health technologies real-world ready. From advanced medical device usability testing using SimMan 3G in simulated clinical environments, to assessing apps like Little Journey designed to support children with autism—this is where patient-centered research meets cutting-edge design.
Their usability work with companies like Directed Systems, whose technology helps anaesthetists prevent post-op complications, exemplifies how academic-industry collaborations can fast-track regulatory approval and market success.
Equity, Engagement and Empowerment
Beyond devices and data, it’s the people behind them who power progress. We’re especially inspired by HRC-DDR’s revitalized HealthTech Public Advisory Group, which is broadening involvement from patients and carers with diverse lived experiences. This commitment to inclusive, co-produced research aligns perfectly with our own mission—ensuring no voice is left behind in the pursuit of better care.
We also want to acknowledge their presence at the Minoritised Life Scientists Future Forum, a standout event in March that underscored the importance of representation and equity across life sciences. It’s exactly this kind of leadership we’re excited to amplify.
Looking Ahead to Life Sciences Week 2025
We’re proud to be hosting the inaugural West Midlands Life Sciences Week—a week-long programme dedicated to innovation, community, and opportunity. Whether you’re a researcher, clinician, entrepreneur or investor, this will be a chance to explore the vibrant partnerships shaping the sector.
We’ll be celebrating examples like the HRC-DDR and MD-TEC and many others who are bridging the gap between big ideas and patient-ready solutions. Their success reminds us that transformation doesn’t happen in silos—it happens when knowledge, creativity and care come together.
